Chief Minister of Telangana

A promise fulfilled

Soon after assuming office, the Honourable Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy’s heartfelt declaration about staying by and working for the people of Telangana resonated deeply with people.

“From now on, the poor shall eat the same fine rice that the rich eat.”

“We have created history by launching this scheme. Over three crore people will now receive fine rice through ration shops. The fine rice distribution scheme is here to stay. I thank the farmers of Telangana for giving me this rice which I can now share with all the people.”

Where dreams meet determination

Shri A. Revanth Reddy’s powerful vision that every citizen - regardless of economic or social status, should eat fine rice — has swiftly turned into a reality through the Public Distribution System (PDS). Today, fair price shops across Telangana are distributing fine rice, a move that marks a historic shift in food security and dignity.

New era of meal with dignity

The Fine Rice Distribution Scheme is more than a welfare measure — it is a bold step towards restoring dignity to every meal. It ensures that every plate in Telangana, whether in a humble home or a mansion, reflects equality and respect. Across the State, people are echoing the sentiment: “It’s not just rice. It’s respect."

One scheme, two benefits: Empowering consumers and farmers

The scheme’s impact extends beyond households. By offering better prices to farmers cultivating fine rice paddy, the government has created a dual-benefit model. It is, perhaps, the first welfare initiative that simultaneously uplifts both the poor and the farmers, strengthening their financial standing and enabling them to live with dignity.

A game-changer in food security

Telangana’s Congress government has launched what is being hailed as the largest food security initiative in India’s history — the free fine rice distribution scheme. Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister Shri Uttam Kumar Reddy announced that

  • 30 lakh metric tonnes of premium quality rice will be distributed annually
  • This will reach BPL families through ration shops
  • Cost to the State exchequer is Rs. 13,523 crore

Switching to fine rice for distribution under the PDS scheme is a game changer in India’s food security landscape. With this scheme, the Congress government wants to ensure that nobody goes hungry.

The Telangana government is independently procuring and distributing fine rice, a superior variety preferred by families. Emphasising that this is a State-driven initiative, the honourable Minister said, “This is a game-changer. Switching to fine rice is a game changer in India’s food security landscape. With this scheme, the Congress government wants to ensure that nobody goes hungry.”

Reaching nearly 85% of the State’s poor, this scheme is not just about food — it’s about dignity and equity. “In my political career, I’ve never seen a programme of this scale,” he stated, calling for strict vigilance against malpractices.
