The making of a future-ready Hyderabad: Steady steps toward a global economic role

09-02-2026

City gears up for its next chapter

Hyderabad, long admired for its cultural depth and historic legacy, is now being redefined by a forward-looking economic vision. As of early 2026, Telangana, under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is steadily shaping itself into a high-performance growth engine, with Hyderabad emerging as one of India’s most competent destinations for Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and advanced electronics manufacturing.

What is unfolding is not accidental growth. It reflects a governance approach focused on speed, clarity, and global competitiveness.

From legacy to leverage

The numbers themselves tell a persuasive story. Hyderabad, today, “hosts over 355-360 GCCs, employing more than three lakh professionals and accounting for roughly 15-17% of India’s GCC ecosystem”, as per D. Sridhar Babu, Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communication, Industry & Commerce.

Nearly 70 new GCCs were established in 2024 alone, and the State is targeting 120 additional centres by the end of 2026, with the potential to generate about 1.2 lakh jobs.

The presence of global leaders such as Apple, Costco, Wells Fargo, Medtronic, and Novartis reflects – more than investor interest – organisational trust in Telangana’s policy stability and talent pipeline.

From an analytical standpoint, Telangana appears to be making a clear shift in its economic strategy. Traditionally seen as a strong outsourcing base, the State is now moving up the value chain. Although it contributes about $32 billion to the $600 billion global IT outsourcing market, the leadership recognises that the next phase of growth lies beyond conventional service models.

With only about 25% of Fortune 500 companies currently present and a rapidly expanding $2 trillion AI economy still ripe for participation, the shift toward Global Value Centres (GVCs) shows a focus on advanced innovation rather than large-scale operations.

Active collaborative networks

This strategic thinking is reinforced by a thriving innovation ecosystem. Institutions such as T-Hub have become active bridges between multinational corporations and startups, with new GCC engagements taking shape almost every week. Such collaborative networks are increasingly critical in determining which cities evolve into global knowledge hubs.

Parallel to the knowledge economy is Telangana’s expanding industrial backbone. The State is now home to over 260

electronics companies, employing more than 50,000 people and contributing nearly 6% to India’s electronics production. Led by major manufacturing clusters at E-City, Raviryala, and Maheswaram, the sector has attracted global manufacturers including Foxconn, Apple, and OnePlus. With emerging focus areas such as IoT, wearables, and aerospace components, Telangana now finds itself at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and next-gen technology.

Emerging economic identity

Importantly, this growth shows the Congress government’s broader approach. Under Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, the emphasis has increasingly been on creating an “investment climate” that is predictable yet ambitious, and balances infrastructure expansion with human capital development.

Industry projections already suggest that 35-40% of new GCCs entering India could choose Telangana within the next five to seven years, reinforcing Hyderabad’s status as the country’s second-largest GCC office market.

Viewed together, these developments point toward a long-term transformation rather than a short-term upswing. Investment is coming into Telangana, and the groundwork for a future-ready economy is taking shape steadily. If this momentum continues, the State is poised to transition from being a participant in global growth to becoming one of its defining centres. This is exactly what indicates a strong shift powered by strategic governance, investor confidence, and an unmistakable sense of direction.
