Shri A. Revanth Reddy
Chief Minister of Telangana
Launched as a part of the six guarantees by the Indian National Congress ahead of the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the Mahalakshmi scheme is fast becoming a symbol of economic empowerment and gender dignity under the leadership of Honourable Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy.
Formally rolled out on December 9, 2023, the scheme is designed to ease the financial burden on women and marginalised communities while promoting mobility, energy access, and kitchen affordability across the State.
All women and trans persons in Telangana are eligible for free travel on Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) buses — a game-changing move that has already resulted in a surge in ridership, making public transport more inclusive, accessible, and cost-effective.
As part of its cost-of-living relief measures, the government provides LPG cylinders at just Rs. 500 for all Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. In a time of fluctuating fuel prices, this initiative delivers tangible savings and food security to lakhs of households.
Every household holding a white ration card now receives up to 200 units of electricity free per month, directly reducing monthly expenses and offering uninterrupted energy access, thus taking a major step towards equitable energy rights.
More than a welfare programme, ‘Mahalakshmi’ is a “strategic social intervention aimed at restoring dignity, mobility, and economic freedom to the women of Telangana”. It reflects the Congress government’s broader vision of a society where women move freely, cook affordably, and live with confidence.
Shri A. Revanth Reddy’s commitment to this promise — made during the campaign and fulfilled within weeks of assuming office — has sent a strong message: governance can be empathetic, efficient, and empowering.
